{"id":760,"date":"2017-09-29T14:12:07","date_gmt":"2017-09-29T14:12:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/statutes.org.uk\/site\/?p=760"},"modified":"2017-09-29T14:16:38","modified_gmt":"2017-09-29T14:16:38","slug":"updates-august-and-september-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/statutes.org.uk\/site\/updates-august-and-september-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"Updates, August and September 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The last two months have seen: continuing automated correction of the OCR-generated text of Pickering&#8217;s Statutes At Large, and some of the Butterworths-published volumes (1807 to 1819, in other words those using the &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Long_s\">long s<\/a>&#8216;). The bash script I have written for this is improving, and I hope to release it soon on github (under a free license of course).<\/p>\n<p>A side effect of hunting down erroneous OCR is the production of lists of such mistranscriptions. I have started to put those on <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/Anterotesis\/OCR-Support\">Github<\/a>; used with the forthcoming script this will constitute an easy way of improving raw OCR of eighteenth century books.<\/p>\n<p>I have started a page collecting <a href=\"http:\/\/statutes.org.uk\/site\/collections\/international\/united-states-of-america\/\">volumes of historic American state legislation<\/a>, mainly colonial, but with some post-revolutionary laws.<\/p>\n<p>SSL has been enabled for the site, courtesy of a free certificate via my hosts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.evohosting.co.uk\/blog\/news\/encrypt-support-here\/\">Evohosting and Let&#8217;s Encrypt!<\/a>\u00a0I will be making all URLs secure by default at some point in the future; this should not break any pages you have bookmarked. Until then, simply starting any them with &#8216;https:\/\/&#8217; will call up the secure advise<\/p>\n<p>New laws added to the site, including: the <a href=\"http:\/\/statutes.org.uk\/site\/the-statutes\/nineteenth-century\/1807-57-geo-3-1-c36-slave-trade\/\">1807 Abolition of Slavery Act<\/a>; from 1740, <a href=\"http:\/\/statutes.org.uk\/site\/the-statutes\/eighteenth-century\/1740-13-george-2-c-17-encouragement-of-seamen\/\">encouragement of mariners;<\/a> and<a href=\"http:\/\/statutes.org.uk\/site\/the-statutes\/eighteenth-century\/1735-8-george-2-c-13-engraving-copyright-act\/\"> Hogarth&#8217;s act for protecting copyright in engravings<\/a> of 1735.<\/p>\n<p>There will now be a hiatus until November, whilst I concentrate upon writing my PhD thesis.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The last two months have seen: continuing automated correction of the OCR-generated text of Pickering&#8217;s Statutes At Large, and some of the Butterworths-published volumes (1807 to 1819, in other words those using the &#8216;long s&#8216;).
